Kensei is a little analogous to the Hunter Ranger: it has a few different abilities for melee vs ranged weapons, and like the Hunter, the ranged option is better. They have Agile Parry for melee, which gives a little extra AC, vs Kensei's shot, where you do a little extra damage but also don't get hit by not walking into melee.
